In November, the Dutch Association of Hospitals (NVZ) announced in a press release that hospitals are registering the verb 'DUPPing' for the Van Dale election 'Word of the year 2018'. DUPPen stands for Digital Exchange between Patient and Professional. A great moment for De Issuemakers, as advisor to NVZ in this complex change process in healthcare surrounding digital information exchange between patient and professional.
NVZ and De Issuemakers
In mid-2017, the NVZ asked The Issuemakers to provide them with communication advice regarding the Acceleration Program for Information Exchange between Patient and Professional (VIPP). A three-year process that, on the one hand, concerns making digital information exchange technically possible in hospitals (through patient portals and personal health environments) and on the other hand behavioral change is an important aspect. The Issuemakers advise in particular on that last part: how can NVZ achieve behavioral change through issue thinking and put digital information exchange on the map. For example, by summarizing digital information exchange in a verb, DUPPing, which should become as normal as pins and apps.
'DUPING with your doctor will soon become an indispensable part of society'
Everyone should be able to DUP, the hospitals believe, as part of the government and healthcare sector's efforts to give patients more control over their health. In order to be able to think about their own health and treatment plan, it is necessary that people have the correct information, such as from a hospital file (EPD). Furthermore, it is important for the doctor to have the correct information about patients in order to properly tailor treatment.
Digital exchange ensures that an appointment is no longer necessary for every question, or waiting until the next working day to call, according to the NVZ. “It's just like going to the bank or booking a holiday,” says Vincent Buitendijk, director of Libra Rehabilitation & Audiology, “we do all that online these days because it's so much easier and faster. Duping with your doctor will soon become an indispensable part of society. That is why it belongs in the Dikke Van Dale.”
Despite the fact that the hospitals are still in the middle of this change process and one hospital is more advanced in the possibilities for DUPPing than the other, it is clear that DUPPing will be possible in every hospital next year. So if you think the 2018 Van Dale election - the 'birth year' of DUPPen - is still too early to choose it as word of the year 2018, we will focus on the 2019 election.
